The Autumn 2026 Colour Story: Warm Browns and Quiet Olives

Colour in fashion moves slowly and then all at once. For the past three seasons, the dominant neutral in the collections was a cool grey. Blue-grey, stone-grey, the grey of concrete. This autumn that changed. The collections moved toward warmth: brown in several registers, a dusty terracotta that is not quite orange, and an olive that sits between green and khaki without committing to either.

Brown, Specifically

Brown is a complicated colour in fashion because it covers too much ground. The brown that appeared in the autumn 2026 collections is not chocolate and not tan. It is a warm mid-brown. The colour of strong tea, or of certain Japanese ceramics. That reads as a neutral without disappearing into the background the way grey does.

It works well with other warm tones and surprisingly well with black, which is not a combination that always succeeds. The key is that the brown needs to be warm enough to hold its own next to black rather than reading as a faded version of it.

Terracotta and Olive as Accent Colours

The terracotta appearing this season is dustier than the bright terracotta of a few years ago. It is closer to the colour of unglazed pottery than to the vivid orange-red that was everywhere in 2022. As an accent colour. A scarf, a bag, a single knit. It adds warmth to a neutral outfit without demanding attention.

The olive is similarly quiet. It appeared most often in outerwear and in trousers, and it functions as a neutral that has more character than beige. For a wardrobe built around black and white, adding one olive piece is a lower-risk way to introduce colour than most other options.

Working the Palette into What You Already Own

The practical question is always how a new colour direction applies to a wardrobe that already exists. The warm browns and olives of this season work well with most existing neutral wardrobes because they are themselves neutrals. They do not require a wholesale change, just the addition of one or two pieces in the new tones.

The easiest entry point is usually a knit. A mid-brown or olive knit in a simple shape. A crew neck, a fine-gauge turtleneck. Can be worn with almost everything already in a neutral wardrobe and immediately shifts the palette toward the season.

Colour is one of the easier things to adjust in a wardrobe because a single piece can shift the whole palette. This season, one warm-toned knit is probably enough.
